Wayne was born on July 22, 1927, in Ninnekah, Oklahoma, to the late William Jesse Darby and Arva Cole Darby, and was raised in Glendale, Arizona. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
On May 17, 1947, Wayne married Helen Joy, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. Together they made their home in Glendale, Arizona, where they raised three sons.
Wayne and Helen enjoyed a life filled with adventure and travel. Some of Wayne’s proudest memories included his naval service during WWII, being a member of the Glendale Cardinal Football Team, and many family adventures with the Phoenix Jeep Club, exploring all across Arizona. He especially cherished camping and fishing trips at the family cabin in Rocky Point, Mexico.
Wayne is survived by his beloved companion of the past 10 years, Lela Bolin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Peggy Darby and Steve and Charlene Darby; grandchildren Tim, Travis, Michael, Ryan, April, and Andrea; and many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 65 years, Helen Darby; his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Joanne Darby; and his siblings, Juanita West and Winston Darby.
