Mary Jane Dickinson, 86, of Camp Verde, Arizona, passed away on Thursday, September 7th, 2023. She was born in Jerome, Arizona, to the late Howard and Gertrude Wingfield. Mary Jane was proud of her family's role in the community, still visible today in the Wingfield Plaza on Main Street. After graduating from Camp Verde High School in 1955 as class valedictorian, Mary Jane moved to Flagstaff, where she attended Northern Arizona University for two years before starting a family. She and her husband, Wallace Dickinson, returned to Camp Verde, raising their children and retiring there.
Mary Jane worked for 17 years as the clerk of the Justice Court in Camp Verde. During the 1980s, she also created, produced, and distributed a line of boutique greeting cards called Yours Truly. With her poignant verses and watercolors, Mary Jane touched people's lives worldwide, as hundreds of appreciative letters attest. In the '90s and early 2000s, Mary Jane worked part-time selling advertising for the Ad King. She devoted the rest of her time to her most-beloved life's project: nurturing and indulging her grandchildren, Luke, Aimee, Zebediah, Tess, Paxton, and Heath.
Throughout most of the 70's and 80's, she was active in the Camp Verde Sorority and 4-H clubs. Under her leadership, the community 4-H club prospered in the typical livestock areas and expanded its reach with new projects in public speaking, citizenship, and conservation. She worked one-on-one with many of her members, guiding them to college scholarships and state and national 4-H awards, including trips to Washington D.C. and Chicago. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. Mary Jane was a seamstress extraordinaire and loved music. She played piano by ear for community events and family celebrations.
Mary Jane is survived by her husband, Wallace; son, Mitchel; daughter, Lara Lawrence; her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Hunter and Elora Jane. She is preceded in death by her sons, Jeffrey and Randal; sisters, Nancy Kilby and Barbara (Babs) Monroe, and brother, Robert Wingfield.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 1:00PM at Verde Valley Church of Christ in Camp Verde. You may share your condolences with Wally and his family at P.O. Box 303, Camp Verde, AZ. 86322.
