Jerry Alan Sage past on Oct 15, 2024 at 2:30am, living the minimalist frugal life he cherished. When the clinical team confronted his niece saying that there was nothing anyone else could do for him, she had hoped it was just another one of his dark sense of humor jokes. These jokes, his "dad jokes", and well enjoyed sarcasm would epitomize him.
Jerry was born to the late George and Mildred Sage on February 18, 1956 in Kansas City, Missouri but spent his childhood in the wilds of the Arizona’s desert. Being the only boy was a dubious task, but he was up for the challenge! He led and tortured his siblings through a childhood of obnoxious pranks with his younger sister, Mary, generally getting the worst of it. Connie, Carol and Mary were amazing sisters who loved his boyish charm and wit and wouldn’t have had it any other way.
You’ve heard of high school grads taking a “gap” year? Well, Jerry took almost a decade to live and decide what he wanted to do. He spent much of that time living in Alaska. After saving money to pursue his degree from DeVry Institute of Technology, he moved to Phoenix. He completed his computer engineering degree in 1985. After that, he was quickly hired by what was then known as Motorola in Tempe. He really enjoyed his work and frequently rode his bicycle back and forth from his Chandler home. He worked there for a bit over 8 years. After having a stroke at 37 years old he was unable to work, in rehab and disability status.
Jerry was involved in sports from early on. His father taught us all the love and basics of baseball and football. His dad was his little league coach and assistant coach for many years, and if you asked Jerry about his dad he would say “Dad was a great coach!”. They found joy in the games which continued the rest of Jerry’s life. He was a talented athlete and played high school football with accolades. He also played on the baseball team as the catcher. Sports brought joy into Jerry’s life, which he shared with his nieces and grand-nieces.
Jerry was pre-deceased by his beloved parents, Howard and Millie, and his brother, Mike. Jerry was also pre-deceased by many beloved pets, including his dog Sady – who he affectionately said goodbye to in the most cowboy Old Yeller way possible. This goodbye could not have been more on brand for our uncle. Left with decades of fond and colorful memories are his three sisters: Connie Harris, Carol Stockton, and Mary Stoney and his brothers-in-law, Jack Harris and Scott Stinson. His brothers-in-law were not left out from Jerry’s antics and have their own stories to share. He also relished his role as a Funcle and Father to his nieces, Larenda Elmer and Janell Wegman, and nephew, Bill Stinson. His hopes were that he would have taught one of them to be as sarcastically witty as him. The grand-nieces & nephews have a lot to live up to!
Sorry, Grandma and Grandpa, we did the best we could to take care of him and keep him out of your hair as long as we could. Back in your court now.
