Gail Gaymer Martin, author, educator, and beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2023 at the age of 86. Gail lived in Sedona, Arizona for the past seven years but spent most of her life in southeast Michigan. Gail’s departure has left an immense void in the hearts of all who know her.
Gail was born on August 28, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan. She leaves behind her husband Bob Martin, step-daughter Brenda Bailey (deceased), and step-son David Martin, sister Janice (Max) Hoffman, brother Dan Gaymer, and numerous nieces and nephews. She dedicated herself to providing love, compassion, and encouragement to not only her immediate family, but to the extended family and friends whose lives she touched. Her passion for life, her sense of humor, and her generosity will be missed by all.
Gail’s passions revolved around the arts; writing, singing, and her faith. Gail began her adult life as an educator, teaching English and Speech, and later as a guidance counselor at Madison High School. She also directed numerous plays at the school. From an early age she displayed a talent for writing and after retiring from K-12 education she embarked on a new career as an author. Gail published over 80 novels and short stories, primarily in the inspirational romance and women’s fiction genre, and also wrote several articles on counseling youth, church service guide books, and a few dinner theatre shows used as fund raisers for her church. Several of her books were translated into other languages, and three were optioned for movie rights. Gail was a co-founder of the American Christian Fiction Writers association.
Gail was always active at her church, serving in various leadership roles over the years, and always as a member of the choir. A talented musician with a beautiful voice, Gail sang many solos and small group numbers at church, and she also sang with a semi-professional group, the Detroit Lutheran Singers. Although a prolific writer, Gail’s real passions were always singing, her faith, and her family. She will be greatly missed by all those close to her.
A Celebration of Gail’s life will take place on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at the Sawyer-Fuller Funeral Home, 2125 Twelve Mile Rd., Berkley, Michigan 48072, beginning at 10am. Her funeral will be at the same location at noon, and interment will be at Oak View Cemetery in Royal Oak at 1pm.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service is planned for Gail on October 14 at 11:00 am at Christ Lutheran Church - 25 Chapel Road, Sedona, AZ 86336
