David Michael Long, 76, of Sedona, Arizona, passed away suddenly on October 8, 2023 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. David was a kind, compassionate and honorable soul who had a fulfilling and meaningful life, with many treasured friends, both recent and life-long.
David was a caring Board Certified Thoracic and Vascular surgeon and Fellow in the American College of Vascular Thoracic Surgeons who was deeply loved by his patients and highly respected by his colleagues. He had a private practice for over 35 years, first in Pittsburgh, PA, and then in Westminster, CO. His dedication to his profession was unwavering, and his compassionate nature shone through in every interaction.Beyond his professional life, David had a wide range of interests and hobbies. His strongest passions connected him with the outdoors both in Boulder and in Sedona: he loved motorcycle riding, fly fishing, and hiking. He was an avid Colorado Avalanche fan always.
David is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Susan (Spielman) Long, with whom he enjoyed over 20 very happy years. He was a devoted father to his daughter, Meghan Long Lauby, and a loving father-in-law to her husband, Tracy Lauby, both of Kearney, NE. David also leaves behind his siblings: Charlene Long of Middleboro, MA; Charles Long, Jr. and his wife Margo Aldrich of Thornton, CO; John Long and his wife Nancy Soyring of Somerville, MA; and Michael Long, Sr. and his wife Mary Reilly of Bayside, WI. Additionally, he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Melissa Carrizales of Denver, CO; Charles "CW" Long, III and his wife Megan (DePinto) Long of Thornton, CO; Erin Long and her husband Andy Jandl of Whitefish Bay, WI; Michael Long, Jr. of Denver, CO; Nathan Long of Los Angeles, CA; Steven Long and his fiancée Ivana Rihter of Los Angeles, CA; Kevin Long of Los Angeles, CA; Ethan Long of Denver, CO; and Thomas Aldrich of Billings, MT.
David was born and raised in Wellesley, MA. He graduated from Tufts University and headed west to the University of Colorado Medical School. He loved the outdoors and wide-open spaces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Long, Sr. and Eleanor Long, as well as a stepmother, Geraldine Reardon Long.
David will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and his legacy of healing, kindness, and dry wit. May he rest in peace.
The funeral service will be private, with a Celebration of Life on April 20, 2024 in Sedona. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Roaring Fork Conservancy at roaringfork.org.
